Raw and selvedge are often used as if they mean the same thing. They do not. Selvedge describes how the fabric was woven. Raw describes what was done, or not done, to the fabric after weaving. A pair of jeans can be one, both or neither.
Denim is also a dyeing story, and dyeing is my field: 14+ years in textile dyeing and fabric development. Here is what each term really means, what you pay for, and four premium selvedge jeans on Amazon. The product section is a specification analysis, not a wear test. Here is how we review.
Raw vs selvedge at a glance
| Selvedge denim | Raw denim | |
|---|---|---|
| What it means | Woven on a narrow shuttle loom, with a clean self-finished edge | Not washed after dyeing and weaving |
| How to spot it | Turn up the hem: a neat edge, often with a colored line | Stiff, dark, even color; may smell of indigo |
| Shrinkage | Depends on finishing, not on selvedge | Large if unsanforized (often 5–10%); small if sanforized |
| Fades | Depends on the yarn and dyeing | High-contrast, personal fades as you wear it |
| Can it be both? | Yes: raw selvedge is common in premium jeans | Yes |
What selvedge really means
Old-style shuttle looms weave a narrow fabric, roughly 30 inches wide, by carrying the weft yarn back and forth in one continuous thread. That makes a firm, self-finished edge that will not fray: the self-edge, or selvedge. Modern projectile looms are faster and wider, but they cut the weft at each side, leaving a loose edge that must be overlocked.
Selvedge is a sign of slower, more careful weaving, and it often comes with better yarns. But the edge itself does not make jeans stronger. Some selvedge denim is ordinary fabric with a premium edge, which is why the yarn, weight and dyeing matter more.
What raw really means
Raw (or dry) denim is sold without any wash after dyeing. It stays stiff and dark, and it molds to your body as you wear it. Two terms matter here:
- Sanforized: the fabric was mechanically pre-shrunk at the mill, so it will only shrink a little (often 1–3%).
- Unsanforized (loomstate): no pre-shrinking. Expect it to shrink noticeably, often 5–10% in length, in the first soak. Buy a size up, or follow the brand’s soaking guide.
Most jeans in stores, including many selvedge pairs, are washed or rinsed, so they are neither raw nor stiff. The four below are selvedge; check each listing if you specifically want raw.
Is selvedge or raw denim worth it?
It is worth it if you care about how jeans age. Good selvedge denim usually uses better cotton and rope-dyed indigo, so it fades with sharp contrast and lasts years. It is not worth it if you want soft, stretchy jeans from day one or if you wash jeans weekly in hot water, which removes indigo evenly and erases the character you paid for.
Four premium selvedge jeans worth considering
1. Naked & Famous Weird Guy Midrise Tapered: best classic Japanese selvedge
A clean-wash dark jean in 13-ounce Japanese selvedge denim, 100% cotton, with a tapered leg. Care label: cold wash, hang dry.
- Fabric view: 13 oz is a sturdy mid-heavy weight that breaks in well and fades clearly. 100% cotton means no stretch, but also no elastane to wear out.
- Fit note: Weird Guy is a slim-tapered cut with an 11-inch front rise.
- Clean-wash dark-tone jean in 13-ounce Japanese selvedge denim featuring tapered leg and tonal stitching
- Five-pocket styling
- Weird Guy Fit: Front Rise – 11”, Leg opening – 7”, Inseam 35.5”
2. Naked & Famous Weird Guy Left Hand Twill: softest feel
A straight-leg dark selvedge jean woven in left-hand twill, with a contrast-tipped coin pocket. Cold wash, hang dry.
- Fabric view: left-hand twill runs the diagonal the other way, which untwists the yarn slightly. The result is a softer hand from day one and fades that look more vertical and streaky.
- Straight-leg jean in uninterrupted dark wash featuring contrast-tipped coin pocket
- Clean pockets at seat
3. Huckberry Stretch Selvedge Denim: best year-round comfort
11.7-ounce selvedge woven on shuttle looms, 99% cotton and 1% spandex, with copper rivets.
- Fabric view: 1% stretch is just enough for comfort without the saggy knees of high-stretch jeans. At 11.7 oz it is light enough for summer evenings.
- Care: wash cold, inside out, and hang dry; heat is what wears out elastane first.
- THE PERFECT YEAR-ROUND MENS JEANS: Crafted from a versatile 11.7 oz. selvedge denim, these men's jeans are the ideal weight for comfortable wear in any season. Whether it's the dead of winter or a cool summer evening, these pants for men have you covered.
- COMFORT FROM DAY ONE: We added just the right amount of stretch—1% to be exact—for a comfortable, broken-in feel from the very first wear. These blue jeans for men offer the perfect blend of durability and flexibility for all-day comfort.
- HERITAGE SELVEDGE DENIM: We use fabric woven on shuttle looms, a process that prevents fraying and unraveling at the seams. It's the kind of quality that denim enthusiasts swear by, and we're proud to continue the tradition.
- BUILT TO LAST: These aren't your average mens jeans. We've reinforced them with classic heritage details, including custom copper rivets, sturdy contrast stitching, and a handsome suede patch. These are men's pants built to stand the test of time.
- CLASSIC STYLE: Dress them up or down, these blue jeans men will quickly become your go-to pair for any occasion.
4. Everlane The Selvedge Slim-Fit: best organic cotton option
12.5-ounce organic cotton selvedge woven on shuttle looms, with 2% elastane, in a modern slim fit. Machine wash cold, inside out; tumble dry low.
- Fabric view: organic cotton performs like conventional cotton in the fabric; the difference is how it was grown. 2% elastane makes it easy to wear but softens the fades.
- PREMIUM SELVEDGE DENIM: 12.5 oz organic cotton selvedge woven on shuttle looms with 2% stretch for long-lasting structure and easy movement
- MODERN SLIM SILHOUETTE: Clean slim-fit men's jeans designed to sit close through the leg without feeling tight so they look sharp and feel easy
- EVERYDAY VERSATILITY: Classic men's denim styling that pairs with tees, button-downs, and sweaters for workdays, weekends, and everything in between
- ALL-DAY COMFORT: Soft organic cotton and a touch of stretch mean these selvedge jeans feel broken-in from day one and move with you
- EVERLANE QUALITY: Thoughtfully made wardrobe essential built for repeat wear with durable construction that helps maintain its shape and look over time
How to care for selvedge and raw denim
- Wait for the first wash if you want high-contrast fades, but wash when they are dirty; sweat and grit weaken cotton fibers.
- Turn jeans inside out and wash in cold water with a mild detergent, ideally alone.
- Hang dry. Dryer heat shrinks cotton and breaks down any stretch fiber.
- Keep new dark denim away from light upholstery and white shoes until it has been washed a few times.

Frequently asked questions
No. Raw means unwashed; selvedge means woven on a shuttle loom with a self-finished edge. Many raw jeans are selvedge, but plenty are not. Sanforized raw denim usually shrinks only a little, often 1–3%. Unsanforized (loomstate) denim can shrink 5–10% in length after the first soak, so size up or follow the maker’s guide. Shuttle looms are slow and narrow, so the fabric costs more to make. Selvedge jeans also tend to use better cotton, rope-dyed indigo and more careful construction. Fading comes from rope-dyed indigo and the yarn, not the selvedge edge itself. Premium selvedge usually fades well because it is made with those better materials. Is all raw denim selvedge?
