A long wool overcoat is the one winter coat that works over a suit, a sweater or a hoodie. But wool coats vary more than they look: a coat labeled wool-cashmere may be mostly wool and polyester with a small share of cashmere, and that blend decides how warm, soft and durable it is.

I have worked in textile dyeing and fabric development for 14+ years, and reading a fiber composition label is daily work. Below are five men’s long wool coats on Amazon, judged on their fiber content, length and construction. This is a fabric and specification analysis, not a hands-on test of each coat. Here is how we review.

How to choose a long wool coat

1. Wool percentage

Wool contentWhat to expect
80% and aboveWarmest, best drape, best natural water and wind resistance
70% to 80%A good balance of warmth, durability and price
50% to 70%Acceptable for mild winters; less warmth and a flatter feel
Under 50%Looks like wool, but behaves more like a synthetic coat

2. Length

A topcoat ends around the knee; an overcoat goes to or below the knee. Make sure the coat is long enough to cover your suit jacket hem fully. Tall men should look for Long or Tall sizing.

3. Fit over your layers

Buy your suit-jacket size if you will wear it over tailoring, and check that the shoulders sit naturally. A coat that pulls across the back will wear faster at the seams.

4. Lining and construction

A full lining helps the coat slide on over a jacket and adds warmth. A single back vent lets you walk freely in a long coat.

How to care for a wool overcoat

  • Brush it after wearing with a soft clothes brush to lift dust and lint before it settles into the cloth.
  • Hang it on a wide, shaped hanger so the shoulders keep their shape.
  • Let it dry naturally at room temperature if it gets wet; never near a radiator.
  • Dry clean once or twice a season, not after every wear. Too much cleaning wears out the cloth faster.
  • Store it clean over summer in a breathable cotton bag to protect it from moths.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage of wool is good for a coat?

70% or more is a good target for warmth and drape. 80% and above is better still. Under 50% wool behaves more like a synthetic coat.

Is a wool coat warm enough for winter?

A dense wool overcoat is warm for most city winters, especially with a sweater underneath. For extreme cold or heavy rain, a down or insulated parka is warmer.

Does 10% cashmere make a difference?

It makes the coat feel softer, but most of the warmth and durability come from the wool. Do not pay a large premium for a small cashmere share.

Can you wash a wool overcoat at home?

Most are dry clean only because the lining, padding and shape can be damaged by washing. Brush and spot-clean between professional cleans.
