A down jacket is only as warm as the air its filling can trap. Two jackets that look equally puffy in a photo can differ a lot in warmth, weight and lifespan, because of three things: the fill power, the mix of down and feathers, and the shell fabric holding it all in.
I have spent 14+ years in textile dyeing and fabric development, including finishes such as water repellency that every good down jacket depends on. Below are six men’s down jackets on Amazon, from a light packable layer to a long waterproof parka, judged on what their specifications reveal. This is a fabric and specification analysis, not a cold-weather test of each jacket. Here is how we review.

What to check before you buy a down jacket
1. Fill power
Fill power measures how much space one ounce of down fills, in cubic inches. Higher numbers mean bigger down clusters that trap more air for the same weight. As a rough guide, 550–650 is good everyday warmth, 700 is very good and 800+ is premium and very light. Fill power tells you quality, not total warmth: a thick jacket of 600-fill can be warmer than a thin jacket of 800-fill.
2. Down versus feathers, and goose versus duck
A label such as 90/10 means 90% down clusters and 10% feathers. Feathers add weight and quills but little warmth. Goose and duck down can both be excellent; goose clusters tend to be larger at the top end. Be cautious with very high fill-power claims on budget duck down, because a listing cannot prove them.
3. The shell fabric
Nylon is lighter and stronger for its weight; polyester resists sunlight fading and dries quickly. Both depend on a water-repellent finish. A truly waterproof shell, with a membrane and taped seams, is a different level of protection, usually found on parkas.
4. Construction
Sewn-through baffles are light but leak a little warmth along the stitch lines. Heat-sealed or box baffles hold the down in place better. Look for a hood, a draft flap behind the zip and cuffs that seal.
5. Responsible sourcing
RDS (Responsible Down Standard) certification means the down was audited for animal welfare along the supply chain. It is a real, checkable standard.

How to wash and dry a down jacket
- Close all zips and Velcro, and turn the jacket inside out.
- Use a front-loading washer on a gentle, cold or warm cycle with a down-specific detergent. Top-loaders with a central agitator can tear the baffles.
- Run an extra rinse; detergent left in the down stops it lofting.
- Tumble dry on low heat with two or three clean tennis or dryer balls to break up clumps. It can take several cycles.
- Make sure it is completely dry before storing. Damp down smells and can grow mildew.
Our sister site explains how dryer heat affects different fabrics, which is useful before you put any jacket in a dryer.
Frequently asked questions
For everyday city winters, 600 to 650 fill power is enough if the jacket has a decent amount of down. Choose 700 or higher if you want the same warmth with less weight and bulk. Not automatically. Fill power and the down-to-feather ratio matter more than the bird. Goose down reaches the highest fill powers, but good duck down performs very well. Most can, if the label allows it. Use a front-loader, a down detergent, cold or warm water, an extra rinse and a long low-heat tumble dry with dryer balls. Most are only water-resistant thanks to a DWR finish. For real rain or wet snow, choose a jacket with a waterproof membrane and sealed seams, or wear a shell over it.What fill power do I need for a down jacket?
